The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has taken a strong stance against the West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Sukanta Majumdar, lodging a formal complaint with the Election Commission. The complaint accuses Majumdar of making threatening remarks and weaponizing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against TMC functionaries.

In a letter addressed to the Election Commission, dated March 31, 2024, the TMC highlighted an incident at a public meeting in Gangarampur on March 30, where Sukanta Majumdar allegedly issued coercive threats to Mr. Prasanta Mitra, the Chairman of Gangarampur Municipality and brother of AITC’s candidate from 6 Balurghat Parliamentary Constituency, Mr. Biplab Mitra.

The letter, shared by news agency ANI, states that Majumdar’s remarks included a direct threat of ED custody for Mr. Prasanta Mitra, surpassing the duration of his tenure as the Municipality’s Chairman. The TMC expressed concern over the BJP’s alleged misuse of central agencies to intimidate opposition parties and manipulate the electoral process.

Furthermore, the TMC accused the BJP of weaponizing various central departments/agencies to obstruct the campaign efforts of opposition parties nationwide during the ongoing elections. They cited previous complaints, including one from TMC leader Mahua Moitra, regarding the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) targeting of opposition members through unjust raids favoring the BJP.

The letter also criticized the perceived inaction of the Election Commission, stating that the lack of visible remedial action has emboldened BJP leaders and candidates to engage in blatant intimidation tactics against TMC functionaries.

The TMC’s latest complaint underscores their commitment to upholding electoral integrity and preventing the misuse of government agencies for political gains. They urged the Election Commission to address the urgent concerns raised and take appropriate action to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process.
